Hundreds of years after the population of Earth was decimated by a meteor, most of its inhabitants have the ability to manipulate natural elements to a small degree. Some though have taken this ability to an all new level.
Miranda Carter is a quiet person who enjoys the solitary life she’s built for herself. Even her job, as a Law Historian, keeps her isolated, out of the spot light, and away from inquiring eyes, insuring the safety of her deepest darkest secret. That is until her long time nemesis Grady O’Brien is falsely convicted of murder and sentenced to immediate death.
Grady O’Brien knew his job with the Special Powers Department, a top secret government agency dedicated to bringing in criminals with above normal supernatural powers, was going to dangerous. What he wasn’t prepared for was getting married to the woman who’d fueled his fantasies for years in order to be saved from imminent death.
Now, if he can keep them both alive long enough to find the person who framed him for murder, they might be able to follow their hearts.

Grady stared at Miranda Carter and tried his damnedest not to grin. Why the little minx. He never, in his wildest dreams, thought she’d be the one to come to his rescue. He listened as she spouted out the details of some ancient law he, and it seemed most everyone else in the room, had never heard of. He glanced at his court-appointed attorney, Stu Jackson, a worthless waste of a law degree. Jackson was pressing buttons madly on his communicator, trying to locate the law in the records system. Grady scanned the room and saw that all of the other lawyers present were doing the same thing. Finally someone shouted, “I’ve got it! Check New Earth Accused Rights’ Code, Number 930428.”
Heads bowed, fingers flew and then Jackson looked at Grady, smiled and nodded. Gee, thanks Stu, Grady thought. Might have helped if you found that information a little earlier. Grady turned his attention to the debate that had now ensued. It was obvious that there wasn’t going to be a quick decision. Miranda’s father, Jackson Carter, proposed allowing the marriage to go forth since there was no one who could discredit the validity of the law. The Judge Superior agreed to this, but appointed a review board that would have one week to decide if the law was still viable. At which time, they would all return to hear that verdict.
Grady glanced at Miranda but she wasn’t looking at him anymore. She was talking fast and furiously with her parents and then turned back to the Judge Superior. “Those terms are acceptable, Judge Superior.”
The airlock released with a hiss and then the Death Dome was rising back toward its home, leaving him standing in the open. Across the room he could see Miranda, followed by her family, making her way down the stairs onto the floor.
He grinned at her as she approached and when he thought she would stop she kept moving until she stood only inches from him.
Her fragrance hit him first. It was sweet and enticing and so very soothing. Then she raised her face to his and studied him with ocean blue eyes made bluer by the traditional midnight blue Congressional headpiece she wore. “Don’t make me regret this, Grady.”
“Now why on earth would you ever regret being my wife?”
“I thought that was obvious, we’re getting married. Isn’t that bad enough?”
Grady fought not to smile. “Considering what I’ve endured over the last couple of weeks, it’s sounding like a dream vacation.”
Miranda blew out a frustrated breath. “Look, I bought you a week, a week by all rights you should have had. Make the most of it and help me find Anna’s killer.”
He cocked his head, surprised at her admitted belief in his innocence. “I know your dad turned in a vote of innocent, but I’m surprised to hear you agree.”
“The facts were there, right in front of everyone.” She glanced around, and he became aware that this wasn’t the place for a private discussion.
He grabbed her hand. “All right. One week. Let’s do it.”
Hand in hand they approached the small group that had now gathered on the floor. There in front of his family, the Carters and the rest of the ruling families of the Delaware Colony he did the one thing he’d sworn he’d never do.
He got married.
